RÉSUMÉ

Winglets and wingtip devices used in aircraft are primarily intended to decrease the vortices formed due to flow around the wingtips. The primary objective of a wing tip device is to diminish the drag of an aircraft by partial recuperation of the tip vortex energy. The winglet cancels out the airflow around itself, thus no net lift or drag is generated on the winglet, but increased lift can be observed on the wing itself. The wing tip devices also decrease the formation of wake vortices, which can affect the airflow behind the aircraft, making it dangerous for other aircraft in the same airspace. This review paper presents the evolution of wing tip devices or winglets over the years and their contribution in decreasing the drag on an aircraft, as well as augmenting the performance of other flow devices such as Heat exchangers and wind turbines. It also addresses the key issues and emerging trends in the design of winglets for various wing geometries.
