Modern power plants are equipped with online performance monitors which provide instantaneous possibility for the evaluation of plant performance control. As the boiler is a main element of the power plant, its performance monitoring and surveillance is substantial part of the system that provides an indication of the plant performance. Expert system that will diagnose performance data provided by performance monitors will assist plant operators that lack a full compliment of online instrumentation. In this respect boiler expert system is a tool for expert assessment of the plant performance, malfunction element assessment and prediction of heat transfer tube failure. It will include also life time assessment and its forecast.
The boiler expert system to be presented in this paper is module type system which includes following modules:
1. Thermal efficiency assessment module is based on the plant instruments reading and their comparison with the respective mathematical model of the boiler.
2. Boiler element failure assessment module is based on the respective instrumentation reading special installed for heat flux measurements. Number of potential situations are determined by the mathematical model to recognize tube failure, exes air, fuel quality and fuel burner outage. Comparing heat flux reading data with the values for the respective situation numerically obtained a recognition of respective failure is determined.
3. Boiler heat transfer surface fouling assessment module is based on the special designed "clean" and "notcleaned" heat flux meters and its installation on the furnace wall. With respective diagnostic system and its ability to recognize specific pattern of fouling processes and knowledge base structure formed to asses specific events a fouling assessment is determined.
4. Life time consumption module is based on the temperature readings for the selected elements and its comparison with the respective expectation structured in the knowledge base. Boiler expert system is in the process of development and main feature will be described together with design philosophy based on the mathematical model of the boiler furnace heat and mass transfer processes. The main tool in this development is a zonal method algorithm of the boiler furnace. It proves to be essential that future use of the numerical models of the different energy system elements could be a very useful tool in the design of expert system.
