The work reported in this paper is concerned with the moisture migration process that causes drying of the soil involving buried electrical power cables. Computations have been performed for two types of soils: one natural and other artificial. A periodic geometry simulating a long array of buried cables, and a non-periodic geometry simulating three buried cables in-line, were considered in the simulations. The results of this investigation have shown that, for initial times, the two geometries give very similar temperature and moisture content profiles in the vicinity of the cable. It was also observed that for the natural soil used the drying process of the soil around the cable is more intense than for the artificial soil when the temperature of the cables is maintained below the limit operating level.
