Influence of the numerical schemes on the flow states of a simplified heavy vehicle

RÉSUMÉ

Recent experiments [1, 2] in the wake of a simplified heavy vehicle (also know as a ground transportation system (GTS)) have shown that the flow topology remains invariant over a large range of Reynolds numbers [3.8 × 104−2.8 × 106]. This allows numerical techniques such as large eddy simulations (LES) to accurately predict the flow topology at low Reynolds numbers, but are computationally expensive. Hybrid RANS/LES turbulence models are an alternative choice where, accurate prediction of the flow is possible on coarser grids ([3, 4]). Numerical simulations are performed using LES and a hybrid turbulence model - partially-averaged Navier−Stokes (PANS) equations at ReH = 3.8 × 104 for a unified tractor-trailer geometry to compare the flow topologies in the near wake. The influence of the numerical schemes on the flow topology in the symmetry plane which is susceptible to bi-stable flow is investigated using PANS, with the results from LES as a baseline for comparison.
