RÉSUMÉ

This contribution deals with the formation of fine particles in a flame reactor for the production of ultra pure glass as raw material for optical fibers. Previous work by many groups has shown that the modeling of particle nucleation, aggregation and sintering can be described by monomere-cluster collisions. However, the sintering rates are very sensitive functions of the local temperature in the flame and the heat loss due to thermal radiation was calculated in the current work. Initially, we found that all particles should have coalesced to spheres for such large flame temperatures. Therefore, we implemented a model to take into account loss of energy due to thermal radiation. With the reduced temperatures in the flame the model resulted in primary particle size distributions which compared satisfactorily with measurements.
