Résumé

Spray freeze drying is a promising technology to produce high-quality porous particles primarily for pharmaceutical uses. The advantages of freeze drying in production of pharmaceuticals and biomedical products such as minimization of thermal and chemical degradation, retention of volatile components, preservation of high porosity, and very low content of residual water after drying are mostly retained in spray freeze drying. In addition, spray freeze dried particles have ideal aerodynamic and physical characteristics suitable for application in pulmonary drug delivery. In this study, spray freeze drying of 3 % (w/w) chicken egg ovalbumin solution in a tray was performed using a batch-type spray freeze dryer developed herein. The physical characteristics of the spray freeze dried particles were qualitatively evaluated by scanning electron microscopy. The freeze drying behaviors of spray-frozen particles were experimentally investigated by measuring the histories of product temperatures and also numerically studied by developing an analysis model based on the finite volume method in fixed grid system. Finally, the effects of operation parameters such as product thickness, heating temperature, etc. were discussed.
