The contribution of small fractions of phytoplankton to its specific primary production was investigated. Primary production was determined in the samples containing various dimensional fractions of algae. Samples were filtered through the miller's gauze N 72, and also through the nucleopore filters with 4.5 μ;m sieve openings. It has been found that the contribution of small fractions of phytoplankton to the total production of organic matter is rather high. A high specific production of small fractions of algae (22.2−567 days−1) is conditioned by a relatively high content of chlorophyll in their cells (1.4−9.8 %) as compared to larger fractions (2.5−320 days−1 and 0.37−5.40 %, respectively), and also by a higher intensity of transformation of the absorbed energy.

In summertime in the surface layer of water of the Dnieper reservoirs during the period of water bloom caused by blue-green algae, the development of phytoplankton is limited or inhibited by light depending on the value of the total solar radiation. Its inhibition is registered at the total solar radiation of 19.3—19.5 MJ/m2·day.

Comparison of original data on periphytic algae of the cooling-pond of the Chernobyl NPS before and after the accident, and also after its removal from operation, made it possible to reveal essential changes in the structure of their communities. After the accident, and also after the removal of the Chernobyl NPS from operation, the species composition and taxonomic structure of periphytic algae changed, whereas the number of their species essentially decreased. Significant changes were registered in the complex of leading species. All species of blue-green algae belonging to facultative thermophytes disappeared.

It has been shown that the growth rate and efficiency of food utilization increase in Cyprinus carpio in the medium illuminated by green light, at the blue light illumination in Carassius auratus, and at the green and blue light illumination in Percottus glenii. These effects are less pronounced when using red and violet light. Daily values of food ingestion differ insignificantly at all studied light regimes.

The development of phyto- and zooperiphyton communities on the experimental substrata treated with anticorrosive coverings with the addition of various chemical compounds was investigated. Hyalinella punctata (Bryozoa) was found to be most sensitive to the influence of toxicants. Algae proved to be less sensitive to their action.

A new version of statistical analysis is proposed based on integral ecological indices. The new method allows summarizing the information obtained in situ and reliably assessing the ecological state and the level of water pollution for a water body as a whole, as well as for its selected parts, using hydrochemical, microbiological and other hydrobiological parameters. The method is shown to be an efficient, feasible and reliable tool for registration of deviations of a water ecosystem from its optimal state caused by environmental changes. It can be used for comparison of data of long-term observations, and for many other applications. The sanitary-microbiological and hydrochemical indices are presented as examples.

The lactate dehydrogenase, isocitrate dehydrogenase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, glucose-6-phosphatase and fructose-1,6-diphosphatase activity were compared in muscles, liver, and brain of yearlings and two-years-old carps maintained at 10−11°C in autumn. It is concluded that the age offish influences the activity levels of major enzymes of glycolysis, Krebs cycle, the pentose phosphate pathway, and gluconeogenesis.

The effects of 14-day exposure of Anodonta cygnea L. to relatively low concentrations of Zn2+, Mn2+, Cu2+ and their mixture with Pb2+ in water (0.1, 0.12,0.01, and 0.01 mg/L, respectively) were investigated. Each of these metals causes an increasing metal content in the digestive gland and gills; the contents of zinc and copper in the metallothioneins rise. The content of metallothioneins in the tissues also increases. Under the influence of zinc and manganese ions, the content of copper in the tissues and activation of the prooxidant processes decrease. UV-spectra of metallothioneins loose their characteristic features. The copper ions and the copper-containing mixture lead to increased contents of this metal in tissues, the rise of antioxidant defense, and to an increase in modifications of metallothioneins revealed by their studying in UV.

A method for estimation of the functional state of fishes is proposed. This estimation is based on quantitative ratios between different metabolic processes such as the values of plastic and functional metabolism and the energy of assimilated food. The analysis of quantitative ratios and their application in biotesting of the aquatic environment quality are discussed.

Interconnection of iodine with some other components of chemical composition of water (dissolved oxygen, water mineralization, value of pH, organic matter) have been considered. The influence of vital activity of phytoplankon on the content of iodine in water has been determined. The dependence of iodine-ions concentration from oxidizing-reducing condition of aquatic environment has been discovered.
