The species composition of aquatic invertebrates-immigrants occurring in continental water bodies of Ukraine, in its estuaries, and adjacent water bodies has been systematized. Brief ecological characteristics of these animals with the indication of the boundaries of their area of distribution, ways of migration, and habitats are presented.

Periphyton algae communities were studied in different sections of the Bureya river basin. The species composition of periphyton algae, their numbers and biomass, and also the complex of dominant species, were determined. The structural peculiarities of algae communities and the quantitative characteristics of their individual components were assessed on the basis of the obtained data.

The cycle of methane was investigated in the water of shallow zones of the Rybinsk reservoir. It has been found that O2 uptake for CH4 oxidation accounted for 10% of BOD1, whereas the uptake of organic carbon for its synthesis was 3.5−9.7 μ;g C/(L·day).

Relationship between resting, dead, and multiplying cells in the model population of Scenedesmus quadricauda (Turp.) Bréb. under normal conditions and under the influence of CuCl2 (0.0001−1 mg Cu2+/L) was determined by the method of separate cultivation of the alga cenobia. At all the studied concentrations of CuCl2, the numbers of algae cells decreased, which may be related not only to their dying away, but also to the inhibition of their regeneration.

It has been found that the balance in the glutamate dehydrogenase reaction in the blue-green alga (cyanobacteria) Anabaena cylindrical is shifted towards amination under the influence of lead ions. It is confirmed by higher activity of NADPH-dependent form of enzyme as compared to the activity of NADH-dependent form. Glutamine synthetase activity is inhibited in algal cells by both Pb2+ ions and glutamine produced.

The ether oil (4.5% of dry mass of the plant) characterized by a predominance of aristolone (11.12%) and P-asarone (10.18%). was isolated from the rhizome of Acorus calamus L. occurring in Ukraine. At the concentrations of this complex of biologically active substances of 0.45-0.90 mg/L, the growth of cultures of green (Chlorella vulgaris Beijer. and Acutodesmus dimorphus (Turp.) Tsar.) and blue-green algae (Anabaena sp., Microcystis aeruginosa Kütz. emend. Elenk. and Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (L.) Ralfs) was inhibited. This complex of biologically active substances influenced the development of natural phytoplankton. As a consequence, the number of its species, and also its numbers and biomass decreased. Anabaena sp. and Microcystis aeruginosa proved to be most sensitive to the influence of the ether oil. The extracts of the rhizome of Acorus calamus (5 g/L) were more active in relation to phytoplankton than its ether oil at the expense of joint action of terpenes and polyphenols.

The changes in the linear-weight growth rate, the indices of spleen, liver and gonad and the condition factor in carps under action of high concentration of allochthonous nitrogen in ponds were analyzed during two years. The most clear negative manifestations of the influence of mineral nitrogen on fish were observed by the autumn and in winter. In spite of high growth rates of fishes in contaminated ponds for vegetation period, they stored up diminished amounts of reserve matters, and it resulted in their reduced by 19.0−41.8% survival in winter as compared to the control. The reproduction system of carp turned out to be not subjected to the influence of allochthonous nitrogen.
Seasonal Dynamics of Manganese Accumulation in Annual Shell Increments of the Mollusk Unio tumidus (Bivalvia: Unionidae)
81-88
10.1615/HydrobJ.v43.i2.90
The Mn uptake by the shell of Unio tumidus demonstrated clear seasonal dynamics with maximal accumulation in summer and the least − in winter. The increase of accumulation rate of this element in summer is related to the increased concentration of suspended planktonogenic forms of Mn in the river water.

The mass fish kill, vendace chiefly, was observed in Lake Lekshmozero (the Arkhangelsk oblast [administrative division], the Russian Federation) in 1996. Thirty-five tons have been buried. The fish kill phenomenon is extremely rare under conditions of the north (the Arkhangelsk oblast and Karelia). Ecological conditions in the lake, which could lead to fish death, and the state of the lakes ecosystem during the modern period are discussed.

Under the influence of two MPC (0.004 mg/dm3) of Roundup, a glyphosate containing herbicide, the greatest histological changes were registered in liver and skeletal muscles of carp; these were less noticeable in intestine while changes in gills and brain were minor.
