The species composition of adventitious actinopterygian fishes of inland waters and estuaries of Ukraine have been classified according to the International code of the zoological nomenclature. A brief ecological characteristic, native habitat areas, ways of resettlement, and areas of introduction are reported.

Data on the composition of phyto-, bacterio-, and zooperiphyton occurring on organic and inorganic substrata, and also on the quantitative indices of their development, are given in the paper. The contribution of each of the above-mentioned components to the formation of periphyton organic matter in the Zhitomir reservoir and in the section of the Teterev river located downstream of it was determined.

The state of the benthic fauna of loose bottom sediments of the Odessa port was studied in 2001 within the framework of the “Globallast” Program. The revealed peculiarities of macrozoobenthos, including a high number of its species, the absence of Tritia reticulata (L.) biocenosis, and a low intensity of development of Capitella capitata (Fabricius), are indicative of a satisfactory ecological situation within the area of water of the port. However, mass development of detrivorous Polychaeta, including Polydora limicola Annenkova and Heteromastus filiformis Claparede, and also of mainly detrivorous Neanthes succinea (Frey et Leuckart) (r-strategist), is indicative of the process of eutrophication of the studied area of water.

The species composition of algae occurring in the fouling of higher aquatic plants in four water bodies of the town of Kiev, and also their role along with macrophytes in the process of accumulation of cadmium, copper, zinc, and lead, was investigated. It has been found that phytoepiphyton occurring on half-submerged plants differed from that registered on submerged plants in the pattern of accumulation of the studied metals.

The quantitative and qualitative composition of hydrocarbons of the lipid complex of cell walls of some species of blue-green and green algae, and also some indices of their ecological metabolism were determined. It has been found that the content of hydrocarbons in the cell walls of algae was conditioned by the intensity of the uptake and excretion of low-molecular organic matter, and also by the response of these hydrobionts to the influence of algicides.

The effects of alternating electromagnetic field (EMF) having a frequency of 500 Hz on productional parameters of Daphnia magna were studied. It was shown a dependence of magnetobiological effects on the stage of ontogeny during which EMF is acting. An attempt is made to explain the “prolonged” action of EMF. It was revealed that this factor might be immediately inhibiting the reproductive processes in D. magna as well as change a program of reproductive realization when EMF acts during the juvenile period.

Vital, lethal and median concentrations of Fakel herbicide (48% isopropylamine salt of glyphosate as the active ingredient) were determined in experiments with Ceriodaphnia affinis. In comparison with the control, fecundity of C. affinis lowered by 75.6% at 10 mg/dm3 herbicide concentration and by 36−40% at concentration of 2.5−5.0 mg/dm3. The 0.001 mg/dm3 concentration was ineffective. This herbicide should be ranked among the toxic agents for aquatic organisms.

Metallothioneins of tissues of digestive gland and gills of the bivalve Colletopterum piscinale (Unionidae) bind about 40% of copper, less then 10% of zinc and more then 80% of cadmium. These are represented by two chromatographic forms: MT-1 (Zn-MT) and MT-2 (Zn, Cu-MT). The content of zinc in tissues and metallothioneins is significantly higher in summer than in autumn while the level of copper is relatively stable. Metallothioneins of digestive gland are sensitive biomarkers of cadmium because these proteins allow its revealing when the content of cadmium in water is below the detection limit.

The values of 137Cs concentration factor in freshwater ichthyophagous fishes of water bodies of Ukraine were studied in 1980−2003. The values of the concentration factor varied over a wide range from 200 to 9560. Its maximum values were observed in 1990−1991.
