Results of the study of the spatial and temporal dynamics of the processes of phytoplankton production and organic matter decomposition in different sections (regulated and non-regulated) of the Teterev river differing in their morphometric characteristics, hydrological regime, intensity of water exchange, and trophic level are given in the paper. The influence of different factors on these processes was also investigated.

The species diversity of macroinvertebrates and their abundance were studied in different algae cenoses occurring on stones of the southeastern coast of Lake Baikal near the Utulik and Khara-Murin rivers. The non-uniform spatial distribution of macrozoobenthos was conditioned by the development of phytocenoses with a predominance of various species of algae. Macroinvertebrates occurred in the lower layer of phytocenoses. They used algae as their protection and food.

Results of the study of the fauna of Copepoda in Novorossiysk Bay of the Black Sea and in the Sea of Azov carried out in 2004 are given in the paper. A total of 67 species of invertebrates was identified. Among them 35 species are not native to the Black Sea. The distribution and taxonomic affiliation of Copepoda, and also possible ways of penetration of the Mediterranean species into the region, are discussed.
Elements of Algae Ecological Metabolism under Conditions of Their Cultivation
34-47
10.1615/HydrobJ.v44.i1.40
Algae producing exometabolites along with other hydrobionts are of considerable importance in the formation of the composition of dissolved organic matter in continental water bodies. The intensity of excretion and assimilation of extracellular organic substances depends on the taxonomic affiliation and physiological activity of the producers of these compounds. Various compounds, including biologically active substances influencing water quality, are formed as a result of the process of decomposition of cell structures.

Material on the species composition of epiphyton algae of some water bodies of the town of Kiev, and also on their role along with macrophytes in the process of 137Cs and 90Sr accumulation is given in the paper. It has been found that epiphyton algae occurring in the fouling of hydrophytes differed from those observed in the fouling of helophytes in the pattern of accumulation of the studied radionuclides. For the most part phytoepiphyton accumulated larger amounts of radionuclides as compared to higher aquatic plants.

Results of the study of the process of accumulation of the ions of heavy metals in the organs and tissues of various species of fishes-biomeliorators occurring in artificial ichthyocenoses of small reservoirs used for various purposes are given in the paper. It has been found that the lowest concentration of toxic substances was observed in fishes occurring in the reservoirs used for drinking and technical water supply, whereas their highest concentration was registered in fishes occurring in the reservoirs receiving the spilled irrigation waters. Fishes occurring in the reservoirs used for irrigation occupied the intermediate place. The content of the ions of heavy metals in the organs and tissues of various species of fishes occurring in small water bodies used for different purposes was lower than their limiting permissible concentration.
Functioning of Aquatic Plants under Conditions of Toxic Influence of Pesticides on Aquatic Ecosystems (a Review)
73-85
10.1615/HydrobJ.v44.i1.70
The review summarizes literature data on various aspects of toxic effects of pesticide on higher aquatic plants and algae. The factors influencing pesticides bioaccumulation, aquatic plants sensitivity and resistance against pesticides action are analyzed. The data on possible effects of pesticide toxicity to macrophytes and algae are systematized. The ways of transformation and detoxification of pesticides by aquatic plants, the mechanisms of their adaptation to the pollution of bodies of water with pesticides are considered.
Radionuclides in the Fish Fauna of the Upper Section of the Kiev Reservoir
86-103
10.1615/HydrobJ.v44.i1.80
Radioactive contamination of fishes of the upper section of the Kiev reservoir and the contribution of 137Cs and 90Sr to the total content of radionuclides in various organs and tissues of different species of fishes were investigated.

The rates of distribution of noninfested mollusks Dreissena polymorpha Pall, from the cooling pond of the Khmelnitskiy Nuclear Power Plant by the ciliates Conchophthirus acuminatus Clap. Lachm. were determined under experimental conditions. There were established some features of ciliates' distribution depending on water conditions (temperature and water flow regime) and dimensional and sexual structure of zebra mussel population.
