Results of phytoplankton primary production study in the Promyslove reservoir (the Teteriv River) have been presented. Direct correlation between gross and net phytoplankton primary production and phytoplankton biomass, chlorophyll a content, as well as between integrated primary production of water column and species number in integrated samples was estimated with high correlation coefficients and reliability. This indicates possibility of these parameters application for production processes intensity assessment.

Changes in the dynamics of communities of phyto-, bacterio-, and zooplankton in the presence of Dreissena and Abramis brama fry were studied under model conditions. It has been found that in the presence of Dreissena phytoplankton numbers and bacterioplankton biomass decreased. The size of algae filtered by Dreissena was 40 μ;m, whereas the volume of bacteria was about 0.2 μ;m3 at their numbers of 4−5 million cells/ml. In the community of zooplankton, the presence of mollusks was responsible for the decrease in the numbers of filter-feeding Cladocera, including Daphnia longispina. In the experiments with Abramis brama fry, the numbers of algae increased, whereas the contribution of Cladocera to the total numbers of zooplankton decreased. The biomass and production of bacteria remained almost unchanged and depended on the development of zoo- and phytoplankton.

The composition and structure of zooperiphyton of the cooling pond of the Tyumen Thermal Power Station-1, and also their annual dynamics, are discussed in the paper. It has been found that in the place of heated waters release the taxonomic composition of zooperiphyton was mixed. It included both rheophilous and limnophilous species. Mollusca were highly diverse in their species composition, whereas Bryozoa, Naididae, and Nematoda occurred in abundance. The peculiarities of the thermal regime of the cooling pond are favorable to the development of introduced species.

Peculiarities of the oxygen regime in the vegetation of higher aquatic plants (emergents, submergents, floating) in the lower Dnieper flood plain water bodies with different water turnover intensity: active (less than 5 days), moderate (5−11 days) and low (more than 11 days) have been studied. In all water bodies' groups dissolved oxygen content increased in a range: emergents, floating, submergents. It was stated that distinguished water bodies' groups considerably differ by oxygen content. In this connection oxygen content to a greater extent is determined by the external water turnover of the water body, and to a less extent by coenosis-forming plant's ecological group.

Organic matter decomposition and catalase activity were investigated in bottom sediments of ponds of the Aleksandriya park (the town of Belaya Tserkov, the Kiev region) supplied by underground waters and heavily polluted by mineral nitrogen. Its content in the incoming water was essentially higher than that registered in the non-purified sewage. Relationship was established between the concentration of mineral nitrogen and organic matter decomposition and catalase activity in bottom sediments.

The influence of humic acids on the activity of some enzymes of the energetic (succinate dehydrogenase), nitrogen (glutamic dehydrogenase), and phosphorus (alkaline phosphatase) metabolism in blue-green (Calothrix braunii Born. et Flah.) and green (Chlorella vulgaris Beijer.) algae was investigated. Inhibition or stimulation of the activity of the studied enzymes depended on the concentration of humic acids in the water, and also on the taxonomic affiliation of algae species.

Literature data on some aspects of the oil pollution of the water bodies are generalized in the review paper. Issues of the oil and oil products' behavior and stability after their ingress into the water thickness, general regularities of the oil toxicity for biota, toxicity assessment and prognosis, patterns of the oil products distribution and bioaccumulation in the water bodies, ways of the oil migration in the aquatic ecosystems have been considered.

Paper deals with data on the effect of the herbicide “Norvel” (active component − quizalofop-p-ethyl, 50 g/L) on the quantity and quality of Ceriodaphnia affinis breed in a series of five generations. Under the herbicide concentration 0.01 mg/dm3 reproductive potential of the studied animals decreased from generation to generation and reproduction stopped at the 5th generation. Concentration 0.001 mg/dm3 was considered as inhibiting, number of progeny decreased by 29% (P > 99%). Concentration 0.0001 mg/dm3was considered as ineffective for the test-objects.
