Long-term original data on epiphytic algae occurring in the fouling of green filamentous algae in the Dnieper reservoirs were generalized for the first time. A total of 118 species of algae represented by 125 infraspecific taxa were found during the period of investigations (1988−1995, 1999, 2004−2007). The largest number of species of epiphytic algae was registered in the Kanev Reservoir - 71 species (72 infraspecific taxa) and in the Kremenchug Reservoir - 71 species (73 infraspecific taxa). On the whole, 14 species (15 infraspecific taxa) of algae were found in the Dnieper reservoirs for the first time. Three algae species are new to the algae flora of Ukraine.

The influence of high concentrations of inorganic nitrogen on the structure and functioning of bacterioplankton and bacteriobenthos was studied in rather small artificial ponds. It has been found that a high content of inorganic nitrogen (Ninorg) in the water influences bacterioplankton and bacteriobenthos both directly and indirectly.

Seasonal dynamics of microbiological processes of methane cycle in bottom sediments of Lake Pleshcheyevo were investigated. It has been found that these processes are of considerable importance in the functioning of the water body. Ecological factors influencing the intensity of methane formation and oxidation in bottom sediments were revealed.

Data on effect of abiotic and biotic environmental factors on membrane ATP-ases of hydrobionts and role of the enzyme in their adaptation to habitat conditions have been summarized. Information on negative effect of some toxicants (heavy metals, oil products, pesticides, inorganic nitrogen compounds) on the ATP-ase system has been systematized. Mechanisms of the ATP-ase system of the aquatic organisms’ adaptation to various environmental factors have been considered.

Main regularities of different mercury compounds accumulation by planktonic Crustacean Ceriodaphnia affinis have been studied in experiment. Sublethal concentrations of mercury compounds were contained either in medium or in food. Peculiarities of their impact on animals depending on pathway of income into the organisms have been revealed.

Heterogeneity of resistance of the genetically polymorphous population of topmouth gudgeon (Pseudorasbora parva Schleger), inbred population of carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) and linear selection of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella Val.) to ammonium nitrogen has been studied. Specimens with elevated heterozygosity have been shown to possess higher adaptive potential; some of them can survive under toxic load and serve as nucleus of new population, resistant to ammonia ions.

Paper deals with analysis of the heavy metals effect on survival of Crustaceans of various taxonomic groups. Median lethal concentrations of metals (LC50) were shown to be minimal for some species of family Mysidae and order Cladocera. Dependence of toxicoresistance on ontogenesis stage and other biological peculiarities of the test-objects and on abiotic environmental factors was shown. Series of decreasing toxicity of metals for marine and freshwater Crustaceans were presented. Metal pollution of the non-freezing water bodies in summer was shown to be of maximal hazard for Crustaceans.

Results of the study of the content and forms of metals migration (Al, Mn, Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cr) in the water of the upper section of the Zaporozhye Reservoir carried out in 2009 are given in the paper. Long-term investigations have shown that the concentration of metals decreased, which was conditioned by a decrease in the intensity of anthropic load. The peculiarities of the distribution of metals between suspended and dissolved forms, the formation of complexes with natural organic ligands, and also the role of individual groups of dissolved organic matter in the processes of complexation are discussed. It has been found that humus substances, as the most distributed fraction of dissolved organic matter, are of considerable importance in the process of metals binding. The influence of oxygen concentration on seasonal dynamics of manganese content, and also of the content of dissolved organic matter on the distribution of metals among their co-existing forms, is considered.
