Specific peculiarities of microphytobenthos development in the upper section of the Kanev Reservoir at different stages of the regulation of the middle reaches of the Dnieper River are discussed in the paper. It has been found that during the whole period of investigations microphytobenthos of the Kanev Reservoir was represented by Bacillariophyta, Chlorophyta, Cyanophyta, and Euglenophyta. However, the structure of the community, the quantitative indices of its development, and species number changed.

The ecological state of the middle section of the Southern Bug River was assessed using the comprehensive approach. Relationship between the characteristics of phytoplankton (species number, diversity, numbers, and biomass) and the content of inorganic compounds of nitrogen and phosphorus in the water of the studied section of the river was analyzed. The factors significantly influencing phytoplankton species number were not revealed. However, several stations invite further monitoring.

Long-term original data on epiphytic algae occurring in the fouling of green filamentous algae in the cooling ponds of thermal and nuclear power stations of Ukraine were generalized and analyzed for the first time. On the whole, 133 algae species represented by 142 infraspecific taxa were registered during the period of investigations. It has been found that in different cooling ponds phytoepiphyton of green filamentous algae was closely similar in its floristic spectra, in the spectra of leading families and genera, in its species composition, in the number of species, and also in the complex of dominant species. This was determined by the similarity of the conditions of its occurrence, including the type of substratum and ecological characteristics of green filamentous algae.

The paper continues a series considering functioning of the viral cenosis in the water bodies [8]; it comprehends and analyzes literature data on role of viruses in the trophic nets of various water bodies. Relations of viruses with biotic components (bacteria and protozoans) in the aquatic ecosystems are considered. Functioning of the microbial "loop" and "viral shunt", as well as importance of investigation of viral cenosis in the fresh, brackish and marine water bodies is discussed.

Peculiarities of functional morphology and cytometry of the erythoid elements of hemolymph of the bivalve mollusk Anadara inaequivalvis Bruguiere were studied using method of the light microscopy. Erythrocytes of A. inaequivalvis were shown to be highly specialized cells with high hemoglobin content (180.64 ± 32.51 pg), elevated specific surface (1.558 ± 0.002 µm−1) and functionally low-active nucleus, confirmed by extremely low value of the nucleoplasmic ratio (0.083 ± 0.001). Nucleus of the cell is of insignificant volume (29.93 ± 0.73 µm3) with high heterochromatin content. Cytoplasm contains granular inclusions, 41.95 ± 2.75 units per cell, which are not constant structures; their presence is connected with functional activity of the cells. When nucleoplasmic ratio is close to 0.04, these inclusions practically are not found. Hemolymph of the mollusk does not contain erythroid elements at early differentiation stages; this fact reflects irregularity of the erythropoietic processes.

Accumulation of copper and manganese by the submerged higher aquatic plants Elodea canadensis L., Ceratophyllum demersum L. and filamentous alga Cladophora glomerata (L.) Kutz. under individual and combined impact has been studied. Use of these species for biomonitoring at combined pollution by heavy metals taking into account their possible interaction has been recommended. The considered species can be used for purification of the aquatic environment with different rate of heavy metals pollution.

Quality of the surface waters of the Kyiv region has been assessed by three radiation safety indices: total β-activity, specific activity of 137Cs and 90Sr. Content of 137Cs and 90Sr in terms of total β-activity in water of the Desna River, Kiev reservoir and river section of the Kaniv reservoir have been determined. Data of previous studies have been confirmed: surface water of the Dnieper basin within zone of extensive radioecological control of the Kiev region can be used as a source of drinking and irrigation water according to actual sanitation regulations.

Paper deals with peculiarities of thermal regime of the water masses of the Kaniv reservoir (Ukraine). Peculiarities of the temperature distribution over the water area, vertical thermal structure of the reservoir and its annual dynamics were studied. Effect of actual climatic changes on the thermal characteristics of the reservoir was assessed. Thermal regime of the additional water bodies (tributaries) was studied. Some aspects of the thermal regime effect on abiotic and biotic components of the Kaniv reservoir ecosystem were considered.

The changes of the lipids' content in mitochondrial membranes of the pike (Esox lucius) gills under elevated concentration of zinc ions were studied. Zinc ions were found to change content of individual phospholipids fractions. The role of mitochondrial phospholipids in the fish adaptation to zinc ions is discussed.
