Spatial and temporal distribution of the structural and functional indices of phytoplankton development was studied in the additional net of the Kiev section of the Kanev Reservoir in the years differing in their hydrometeorological conditions. A total of 260 species and infraspecific taxa of algae of eight divisions was identified. In winter phytoplankton was characterized by inverse vertical stratification, in summer it was direct, whereas in spring and autumn its distribution over the water column was uniform. A direct relationship was established between the species diversity of plankton algae and water temperature, which is described by linear function. Under abnormal hydrometeorological conditions, the structure, numbers, and biomass of phytoplankton, and also the complex of dominant species, differed from those typical to water bodies of the additional net of the Kiev section of the Kanev Reservoir.

the Crimea.
Analysis of long-term dynamics of Mytilus galloprovincialis larvae numbers in the surface layer of the coastal waters of the Crimea, the study of which lasts since the mid-twenties century is given in the paper. It has been found that in spring the average concentration of M. galloprovincialis numbers is higher than that registered in autumn. For the most part in spring the highest numbers of larvae are observed in April. The reasons of this phenomenon are as follows: spring spawn of the animals and the influx of pediveligers of the autumn and winter generations from the deep layers of the sea into the surface.

Results of the study of the flora of the Chichikleya River are given in the paper. On the whole, 91 species of algae (Bacillariophyta − 44, Cyanoprokaryota − 19, Chlorophyta − 14, Euglenophyta − 7, Xanthophyta − 3, Streptophyta − 2, and Chrysophyta − 2) and 10 species of higher aquatic plants were found during the period of investigations. Seasonal dynamics of algae species composition were studied. The ecological state of the watercourse was assessed in terms of indicator species.

It has been found that in water bodies of various types (reservoirs of the Dnieper cascade and lakes of Kiev) the taxonomic structure of phytoepiphyton of higher aquatic plants is closely similar. Its peculiar feature is the presence of Streptophyta (the class Zygnematophyceae and the orders Zygnematales and Desmidiales) in the spectrum of leading taxa. These algae along with Bacillariophyta and Chlorophyta prevail in terms of their numbers and biomass, and also enter into the composition of the complex of dominant species. Streptophyta are represented mainly by attached organisms occurring in mesotrophic and eutrophic waters in the sections with a higher content of organic matter. They are registered at lower values of pH. These algae are more abundant in the sections with a lower speed of water flow. Comparison of ecological characteristics of Streptophyta with the data of hydrochemical investigations supports the statement that they are reliable indicators of the environmental conditions.

Temperature resistance of the laboratory and natural populations of Pontogammarus robustoides (Sars, 1894) and Chaetogammarus ischnus (Stebbing, 1898) to increased temperatures of the aquatic medium was studied. Thermostability degree was estimated at static and dynamic impact. In both modes P. robustoides was revealed to be more resistant than Ch. Ischnus. Peculiarities of the gammarids' thermostability changes depending on preceding temperature were shown. During prolong adaptation to the narrow range of elevated temperatures (19−25°C) thermostability of Ch. Ischnus increased; adaptation abilities of P. robustoides decreased at the static impact of extreme temperatures. Intraspecific differentiation of individuals by thermostability degree and adaptation ability was shown.

activity of aspartate aminotransferase.
Four color groups of Mytilus galloprovincialis Lam. were identified using computer processing of the shell pictures: black, intermediate, dark- and light-brown. Activity of aspartate aminotransferase in the tissues of the mussels was shown to increase from the darker to lighter colored specimens. Possibly this difference in AST activity is determined genetically and is connected with tolerance of the color groups to hypoxia.

The effect of sublethal concentrations of the fine-dispersed (cluster) silver on morphometric characteristics and reproduction of the planktonic crustacean Ceriodaphnia affinis was studied. In the freshwater ecosystems changes of the population number and fertility of crustaceans, which serve as food supply for other aquatic organisms, can negatively affect the whole ecosystem.

Paper deals with data on the contents of oil hydrocarbons in hydrobionts, inhabiting thickets of the sea grass Zostera noltii (Hornemann) in the relatively clean waters of the south-west coast of the Crimea. Average content of oil hydrocarbons in Z. noltii and microphytoperiphyton was very close − respectively 0.56 ± 0.12 and 0.62 ± 0.15 mg/100 mg. There was no significant difference between content of oil hydrocarbons in the plant-eating mollusks (Rissoa membranacea (J. Adams), Bittium reticulatum (da Costa), Tricolia pullus (L.)) and filterer mollusks (Mytilidae, Parvicardium exiguum (Gmelin)). The obtained data can be used for environmental monitoring and for the study of the coastal biofluxes of oil hydrocarbons.

the cooling pond of the Chernobyl NPS.
137Cs specific activity in fishes differing in the type of their nutrition was studied in 1978−2013 in the cooling pond of the Chernobyl NPS. Long-term dynamics of the fluctuations in 137Cs specific activity in 13 species of fishes are given in the paper. The coefficient of inversion (Kinv) reflecting changes (inversions) in 137Cs specific activity over any period was calculated in assessing dynamics of 137Cs specific activity in fishes. The highest specific activity of 137Cs is registered in fishes of high trophic levels. From 1986−1987 until 2012−2013 the specific activity of 137Cs in fishes decreased almost by a factor of 100. The most intensive decrease in the specific activity of 137Cs is typical to fishes of low trophic levels. In 2011−2013 in the cooling pond of the Chernobyl NPS in the studied species of fishes, the specific activity of 137Cs ranged from 0.8 to 7.6 kBq/kg.
