We propose a laser head design, a dye laser pumping system with the use of a preionization pulse and an emission wavelength tuning system using the pulsed switching of a hollow cathode lamp. The research is directed towards increasing the duration of the emitter operation, its efficiency, and the tuning accuracy.
One of the urgent problems concerning the prospects of using tunable dye lasers for atmospheric sounding involves the task of increasing their energy efficiency, that is, the enhancement of energy, spectral brightness, and efficiency. In order to increase the signal-to-noise ratio, it is very important to provide high average power along with high energy in a pulse. In the case of nonmonochromatic excitation it is possible to use high-energy parameter pump sources. This enables excitation of large dye volumes and radiation energy yields of up to several joules in a band of the order of several picometers [1, 2]. Nevertheless, a comparatively small number of devices whose high-energy and spectral characteristics are combined with considerable operation time are known. Problems of achieving a high-quality beam and difficulties in obtaining a frequency mode operation in most effective coaxial and other "dense packing" pumping systems hinder their application as lidar emitters.
In this paper we present the results of studying dye lasers with pumping by rectangular lamps in elliptical mirror cavities. The lasers developed were successfully employed in various lidar stations during several years [1].
