The qualitative and quantitative composition of phytoplankton was studied over the years 2002-2015. Species diversity of phytoplankton of the Dnieper-Bug estuary system was relatively high - Shannon - Weaver index (H) for the entire reservoir amounted to 2.35 with quite high Piel equalization index e = 0.84. The tendency was revealed of the relationship between the biomass of phytoplankton and the river annual yield in the lower section of the Dnieper River. The dependence degree increased from the eastern (R2 = 0.5913) to the central sections of the Dnieper liman (R2 = 0.6415) and gradually decreased to its western region (R2 = 0.4729) and the Bug liman (R2 = 0.446). Just this determined the dynamics of the phytoplankton biomass in the lower section of the Dnieper River and the Dnieper liman, particularly in its central part.

Bioindication characteristics of algae were used in assessing the ecological state of 12 ponds of Kiev located within the territory of the Goloseyevo National Natural Park. Results of the ecological analysis have shown that planktonic-benthic and planktonic organisms were represented by the largest number of species. Algal species - indicators of slowly flowing and moderately warm waters, and also indifferent organisms in relation to pH and water salinity prevailed in phytoplankton of the studied ponds. Among diatoms - indicators of the type of nutrition, nitrogen-autotrophic taxa tolerating elevated concentrations of organically bound nitrogen were represented by the largest number of species. Eurysaprobes and β-mesosaprobionts predominated among the indicators of organic contamination, whereas eutraphentic organisms-among the indicators of the trophic state. It has been found that the Orekhovatka ponds were contaminated by organic matter and nutrients most.

In the freshwater mollusk Viviparus viviparus, collected in the water bodies of the Ukrainian Polissya natural zone, characteristics of the annual production, based on various mass indexes (total mass, shell mass, mass of wet, dry and ash-free tissues) and P/B coefficient were determined. Portions were calculated of each age class into the total annual production. Multiple regression equations were obtained, enabling determination of different characteristics of the V. viviparus annual production on the basis of standard hydrobiological parameters - settlement density and biomass.

Paper presents results of investigations of the effect of sodium humate and potassium humate on concentration of chlorophyll a and carotenoids and intensity of lipid peroxidation in several species of Cyanoprokaryota and Chlorophyta. Response of the considered algae to the impact of alkaline metals humates was shown to depend on the species specificity and on active ingredient concentrations. In most cases humates of potassium and sodium in concentrations of 5 and 10 mg/dm3 stimulated functioning of the investigated species of green microalgae, whereas Cyanoprokaryota species were suppressed.

The effect of the prolong oscillation of water temperature on content of the energy substances and ATP-ase activity in the gill of the freshwater bivalve mollusk Unio tumidus has been studied. The decrease of glycogen and total protein content along with differently directed changes of total lipids content and intensity of lipid peroxidation were noted. Dependence was stated between ATP-ase activity in the gills of U. tumidus on oscillation of water temperature.

Paper deals with studies of seasonal dynamics of heavy metals concentration in tissues of the medical leeches Hirudo verbana Carena and in the bottom sediments of the Chelbas River (Krasnodar region). Bioaccumulation of Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cd, Pb in leeches was considered. High accumulation ability of the essential element Zn and toxic Cd and Pb was noted. Statistically reliable correlations between Cu, Fe, Ni, Cd, Pb content in tissues of leeches and their content in bottom sediments were revealed.

Results of long-term investigations of the content of iron in surface water bodies of various types, including the reservoirs of the Dnieper cascade, the Danube River (the Kiliya delta), the Desna River, rivers of the Pripyat, Southern Bug, Ros, Gorny Tikich, and Seret basins, the reservoirs formed on these rivers, some Shatsk lakes, and water bodies located within the territory of Kiev, are given in the paper. The occurrence of this metal mainly in the composition of suspended matter (61.4-97.3% Fetotal) is typical to river waters. In the branches of the Kiliya delta of the Danube River, iron migrates mainly in suspended form, which is conditioned by a high content of mineral suspended matter. A predominance of iron suspended form is observed in some small water bodies of Kiev, which is conditioned by intensive development of phytoplankton. In the reservoirs of the Dnieper cascade, iron occurs mainly in the dissolved form, which is conditioned by its binding into the complexes with organic matter. The degree of iron complexation in the studied water bodies accounts for 89-97% Fedis. In surface waters with high coloration (rivers of the Pripyat basin and the upper reservoirs of the Dnieper cascade), humic substances are of crucial importance in binding iron. In small water bodies, a significant portion of Fedis was found in the composition of neutral complexes with carbohydrates. Results of the study of molecular-mass distribution of anionic and neutral complex compounds of iron are discussed in the paper.

Results of the study of the distribution of dissolved organic matter in the water of Lake Rayduzhne (Kyiv) carried out in 2015-2016 are given in the paper. They include intra-annual and seasonal dynamics of the total content of dissolved organic matter in terms of chemical oxygen demand and permanganate oxidizability, and also seasonal dynamics of the concentration of its individual components (humic acids, fulvic acids, carbohydrates, and protein-like substances) in the surface and near-bottom layers of water. The main hydrochemical characteristics of the water body, including pH, dissolved oxygen concentration, and water saturation by oxygen, are also presented. Seasonal changes in the ratio between the fractions of fulvic acids, carbohydrates, and protein-like substances differing in their molecular mass are also discussed. The concentrations of organic carbon and mass contribution of individual organic components to the total content of dissolved organic matter were calculated.

The species composition of Peritrichia of the Teteriv River was investigated. On the whole, 26 species of Peritrichia of 10 genera were identified. Dynamics of their density depending on physical and chemical parameters of the water were studied. Relationship was established between the density of Peritrichia and water temperature and dissolved oxygen content. The structure of the dominant complex of Peritrichia was analyzed.

Results of the study of the spatial distribution of naked amoebas in sandy bottom sediments of the Gnylopyat River (near the town of Zhytomyr) are given in the paper. On the whole, 15 species of naked amoebas of nine morphotypes were found in different layers of bottom sediments during the period of investigations. A total of two ecological groups of naked amoebas occurring in different layers of bottom sediments was identified. It has been found that the spatial distribution of the species composition of naked amoebas in the Gnylopyat River is rather non-uniform.
