Efficient Scalable DCT Block-Based Image Coder with Compression of Signs of DCT Coefficients

ABSTRACT

This paper presents an efficient DCT based method for image compression. The method uses a sophisticated bit-plane coding of quantized DCT coefficients and provides both spatial and quality/speed scalability. A fast post-filtering aimed for deblocking and facilitation of Region of Interest (ROI) coding is also described. Utilizing the coding of signs of DCT coefficients further improves coding efficiency of the proposed coder. The coder can be used for lossy image compression as well as to further lossless compression of already compressed JPEG images whereas its performance is close to that one of JPEG2000.
