ABSTRACT

The ray optics approximation is applied to solving the problem of estimating the electric and magnetic field amplitudes on the axis of a dielectric two-axial ellipsoid with loss that is illuminated by a plane linearly polarized electromagnetic wave. It is shown that the electromagnetic field in the focal range changes with an oscillating character. Positions of the local maxima depend on the electrophysical parameters and axial ratio of the ellipsoid. With a certain ratio of the two-axial ellipsoid axes, the electromagnetic wave is focused at a point inside the ellipsoid. The algorithm of calculating the field strengths at the points of electromagnetic wave focusing inside cylindrical, ball-shaped and ellipsoidal dielectric bodies can be used for explaining the effects of local heating of dielectric materials in the electromagnetic wave field.
