Optimization of the Sectionalized Taper for Quasioptical Waveguides
ABSTRACT
Reported here are experimentally obtained amplitude-frequency and polarization characteristics of the optimum sectionalized waveguide taper (OSWT) intended for broadband coupling of quasioptical circular-section transmission lines of type of "hollow dielectric waveguide" (HDW). Due to a simple shape of the OSWT section like truncated circular cones, all the advantages of mechanical simplicity are offered. The design relations are validated by their translating into an HDW-based four-section OSWT, with being tested over a broad wave region 2.5-8.0 mm. It is shown that keeping the broadbandness and low depolarization value of the ordinary linear taper, the OSWT geometry essentially reduces the transition region extension. Besides, even if having only a few section, the OSWT practically amounts to the ideal parabolic taper in performance and, with its simple shape, derives the benefit from the incomparably easier manufacture.
