ATOMIC LEVEL SIMULATION OF CUTTING

ABSTRACT

The quantum mechanics computer approach (the density functional theory and the pseudopotential method) is used to study the interaction of nanosized species of different origins, such as W, WC, and Al, which simulates the cutting process. It is shown that the low-speed cutting is characterized by diffusion mixing, plastic deformation of parts, and intense destruction of the cutting instrument. At high-speed cutting, mixing and plastic deformation do not occur due to short time, the cutter practically is not destroyed, and cutting goes more smoothly. The cutting force decreases with increase of speed.
