NEW ACTIVE BINDER-BASED PROPELLANTS: A COMPARISON WITH CLASSICAL COMPOSITE AP/HTPB PROPELLANTS

ABSTRACT

For decades, research activities studying the combustion mechanisms of energetic materials, solid propellants, and their ingredients have been carried out at ONERA. For the past few years, new propellants, including active binders and various energetic oxidizers (octogen, ammonium dinitramide, hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane, etc.) with high volumetric impulse potential have been tested. This paper describes the work performed at ONERA and covers the development of the energetic propellants from the understanding of the surface combustion mechanism, using information from visualization techniques to develop a simplified model leading to the burning rate evaluation. The validation of the input data required by the models is of major importance; specific experimental setup and apparatus have been used for determining pertinent parameters. The consistency of these data was verified and is presented in this paper. A comparison between ammonium perchlorate/hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene composite propellants having an inert binder and the new propellants with active binders shows that the combustion processes of the new propellants differ significantly from those of the classical composite propellants.
