MONOMETALLIC AND BIMETALLIC PT-BASED NANOPARTICLES AS TETRAMETHYLTETRAZENE (TMTZ) DECOMPOSITION CATALYSTS

ABSTRACT

This study reports the first results on tetramethyltetrazene (TMTZ) decomposition via heterogeneous catalysis. Monometallic noble metal (Pt and Ir) as well as bimetallic catalysts (Pt–Cu and Pt–Zn) deposited on alumina powder, grain, and/or spheres have been evaluated for this decomposition. The addition of a transition metal such as Zn on Pt/Al2O3 enhances the catalyst activity. A catalyst able to decompose TMTZ at 100°C (no less than 70°C below the thermal decomposition temperature) was thus obtained and highlighted the formation of molecular nitrogen, amines, and tetramethylhydrazine.
