Abstract of "Future of Implantable Neuroprosthetic Devices: Ethical Dilemmas"

From the well-established results of cochlear implants to the advent of implantable microelectrode arrays, implantable neuroprosthetic devices have gained increasing attention of health-care professionals, scientists, engineers, and the population in general. With recent depictions and projections of these neuroprostheses by the news media and movies, the confusion about their current state and concern for their future use has increased tremendously among the public as well as many government agencies and nongovernment organizations. We discuss the present state of development of some of these implantable neuroprostheses, the possible future use of this technology, and the associated ethical issues that can be the cause of concern and sometimes alarm. This would include the process of manufacturing, animal experimentation, human trials, the scope of use, and the individual and societal concerns associated with the use of such devices.
