LOW-FREQUENCY WAVE PROPAGATION IN GEOLOGICAL MEDIA WITH ISOLATED CRACKS

ABSTRACT

In this work, we study plane wave propagation in preloaded elastic media weakened by cracks with periodically distributed degree of fracturing. We assume the cracks to be isolated closed penny-shaped, randomly oriented. We take into account the Coulomb friction between the crack faces. We propose a multiple scales approach which allows us to replace real heterogeneous material by homogenized effective media. We show that the effective characteristics of homogenized media depend on the parameters of structure at the micro- (isolated cracks) and mesoscale (characteristic size of periodic distribution of the degree of fracturing). As a result, we have obtained expressions for displacements and velocities of transverse and longitudinal waves in effective media, and studied how these quantities can be influenced by external stresses, elastic modulus values, Coulomb's friction coefficient, degree of fracturing, and by the direction of wave propagation.
