STRUCTURE AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF ULTRAHIGH MOLECULAR WEIGHT POLYETHYLENE FILLED WITH TUNGSTEN, CARBON BLACK, AND BORON CARBIDE OR NITRIDE

ABSTRACT

Ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene-based composites were obtained by solid state mixing of a powder component with subsequent hot pressing. The structure and mechanical properties of composites were investigated. It was observed that the composites obtained by using a planetary ball mill possess better adhesion of inorganic fillers to the polymer matrix, and, correspondingly, better mechanical properties than composites produced using a knife mill. Replacement of boron carbide with boron nitride results in the decrease in the mechanical properties due to destruction and embrittlement of polymer matrix.
