ABSTRACT

Results of the study of transboundary watercourses located between the Sozh and Desna rivers within the territory of the Chernigov, Gomel, and Bryansk regions are given in the paper. It has been found that the number of animal species and groups in benthos communities depended on the size of the river, and also on the area of thickets. In this case, the number of fish species correlated well with the number of macroinvertebrates species in benthos biotopes. It has been found that the state of watercourses of the studied region is favorable. However, the integral assessment of the ecological state of the rivers carried out following the principles of the Water Framework Directive of the European Community has shown that none river can be recommended as the model one for determining "reference" values in terms of biological and hydrochemical descriptors.
