A Method for Analysis of Seasonal Growth of Some Freshwater Bivalves (Unionidae: Bivalvia)

ABSTRACT

Estimation was made of retrospective parameters of radial growth of shells in bivalves of the family Unionidae. Individuals under study lived in three different water bodies of the Kiev and Chernigov regions (Chernobyl NPP cooling reservoir, the Pripyat’ and the Desna rivers) for the period 1976-2000. Shells of different Unionidae species living in one pool are characterized by similar growth parameters. It allows comparing sclerochronological data from various water bodies differing in the species compositions of Unionidae.
