ABSTRACT

It is stated based on laboratory simulation experiment that saponin, a hemolytic glycoside, may be an actual cause of fish kills in environmental water bodies. Irreversible toxic effect of saponin on fish occurs at its 2.0 mg/L concentration. It was demonstrated on the example of two tributaries of the Pripyat (Pripet) River that wastewaters of beet-processing sugar mills may be the source of saponin in natural waters.
