ABSTRACT

Based on experimental investigations, and also on the analysis of literature data, a direct relationship was established between the total production to organic matter decomposition ratio (A/R) and the intensity of phytoplankton net production. It has been found that low values of organic matter decomposition at a high intensity of phytoplankton photosynthesis may be conditioned by the influence of biologically active exometabolites of algae, in particular of glycolic acid capable of inhibiting bacterial decomposition of organic matter.
