THERMAL PERFORMANCE OF CLOSED LOOP PULSATING HEAT PIPE: AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY WITH VISUALIZATION

ABSTRACT

This paper present preliminary the experimental results on the thermal performance of closed loop pulsating heat pipes (CLPHPs) using pure and binary working fluids. The CLPHP is made of copper capillary tubes, having inner and outer diameters are 2.0mm and 3.6mm respectively. The working fluids are employed as water, ethanol, methanol and acetone also binary mixture (1:1 by volume) of water-ethanol, water-methanol and water-acetone. For all experimentations, filling ratio (FR) 50%, two-turns and vertical bottom heat mode position was maintained. The lengths of evaporator, condenser and adiabatic section are 42mm, 50mm and 170mm respectively. The adiabatic section has partially made up of glass tube, having length 80mm, to assist flow visualization. The results shows that, thermal resistance are decreases smoothly upto 40W heat input, thereafter reasonably steady. Binary working fluid shows the better thermal performance in comparison to its pure constituents. Water-acetone binary working fluid has shown the best thermal performance over other working fluid. The thermal performance (i.e., overall thermal resistance) is strongly dependent on the flow pattern existing inside the tubes.
