Thermal-Fluid Characteristics of Pin-Fin Heat Sinks Cooled by Impinging Jet

ABSTRACT

The performance of pin-fin heat sinks with air impingement cooling is investigated numerically and experimentally. The effects of the fin geometry and the Reynolds number on the heat transfer of the heat sinks are discussed. In general, the trends for the experimental data and the simulated results are in good agreement. The thermal resistance of the heat sink can be reduced effectively as the Reynolds number is increased. However, the improvement of the thermal resistance decreases gradually with increased Reynolds numbers. It is shown that the fin width corresponding to the minimum thermal resistance increases with the Reynolds number. The thermal resistance decreases as the fin height is increased initially. However, further increase of the fin height will cause the thermal resistance of the heat sink to increase.
