EHD Augmentation of Nucleate Boiling at a Gewa-T Surface

ABSTRACT

In this paper, the electrohydrodynamic (EHD) augmentation of nucleate boiling at a passive enhanced surface, Wieland Gewa-T, is reported. The experiments were carried out using a single tube heat exchanger test rig by applying a 0 − 20 kV radial d.c. field to a dielectric liquid (Refrigerant R l14) on the Gewa-T surface. The results were compared with those for other surfaces obtained under the same experimental conditions. The mechanism of the EHD effects on nucleate boiling at a passive enhanced surface is discussed and analysed. The results indicate that the nucleate boiling for such a surface can be further enhanced at low superheat by utilizing the EHD effect. The elimination of boiling hysteresis and thermal controllability were also demonstrated in the experiments.
