A numerical investigation was conducted to better understand the fluid flow in mini-channels with a porous surface structure in order to enhance the single-phase forced-convection characteristics and performance. The investigation attempted to quantify the influence of the surface structure geometry on the liquid pressure drop along the mini-channels. Various porous structures with flat, triangular, hemispherical, and drop-shaped geometries were utilized in the analysis. The presence of these structures was found to alter the pressure distribution along the mini-channel, while improving the heat transfer rates and increasing the average fluid temperature due to the enhancement in the effective heat transfer area and the mixing process in the flow. The results indicate that the fluid flow is considerably altered due to the presence of protuberances. Considering the heat transfer enhancement and the associated pressure drop, the hemispherical design was found to be the most attractive modification among the various cases analyzed.
