Characterization of a vortex-stabilized arc plasma torch using simple power expressions

ABSTRACT

A complete characterization of an air vortex-stabilized plasma torch was carried out with the application of simple power relationships. Voltage and efficiency were generalized by the correspondent characteristic equations as functions of current and gas flow rate. The power expressions approximations showed good agreement with the experimental results. We also calculated the mass average plasma enthalpy and the temperature at the exit of the torch. Simple equations, independent on the flow rate, were obtained for the calculations of the thermal losses as function of the current and of the efficiency as function of the arc voltage.
