The Nature of Arc Cathode Spots

ABSTRACT

Cathode spots are a basic constituent of electric arcs with cold electrodes, because they provide for the current continuity at the surface. By using laser absorption imaging and streak pictures with prevailing continuum radiation new insight in the nature of the spots has been gained. The results indicate spot radii <10 μm and time constants <100 ns. Also, a substructure with still smaller radii and time constants seems to be possible. This means a principally non-stationary nature of the cathode spot.
