MAPPING OF SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF OSCILLATIONS IN A THERMAL PLASMA JET

ABSTRACT

CCD camera with the imaging frequency 8000 fps was used for recording optical radiation of a thermal plasma jet. The fast Fourier transform of the recorded matrices representing the evolution of plasma jet radiation intensity was used to acquire frequency spectra for each pixel of the CCD chip. Spatial distributions of amplitudes at significant frequencies reflected by peaks in frequency spectra and corresponding to various types of oscillations were then evaluated. The results show that some types of oscillations are generated mainly on the jet boundaries or tail and their relative intensities may be sometimes distributed strongly asymmetrically, while the amplitudes corresponding to the plasma jet modulation introduced by the ripple of the arc current show distributions with several maxima at distinct plasma jet regions.
