ECOTECHNOLOGY FOR HYDROGEN SULFIDE REMOVAL AND PRODUCTION OF ELEMENTAL SULFUR
ABSTRACT
During anaerobic microbiological degradation under biosulfidogenic conditions, organic helatocomplexes with heavy metals of sewage sludge are destroyed and stable compounds of metal sulfides are formed: iron sulfides (marcasites), nickel, chrome, etc. A biogas is formed that is purified in a biodesulfurization unit. The modification of the biodesulfurization technology was carried out using the acidophilic mode of biofilter process. The enrichment culture of T. Intermedius and T. Ferrooxidans were used in the biodesulfurization system for hydrogen sulfide conversion to elemental sulfur. The biomass is immobilized on support media. There are materials that consist of Lavsan fiber and granular activated carbon. The optimal condition of the process was determined. Phosphogypsum is applied as a mineral source for a nutrient medium in the process of the growth of microorganisms. The variations of the pH 4.0−6.5 of culture media resulted in the changes in the activity of Thiobacillus sp. and hence in the bacterial populations as well as in H2S removal. The biomass is immobilized on the material medium consisting of a Lavsan fiber. The total immobilized biomass is 1.7−3.5·1010 CFU/g. Immobilization of microorganisms on granular activated carbon has shown that the total immobilized biomass at the end of batches is equal to 1.6·109 CFU/g. The technological application of complex biotechnology to produce a fertilizer with removal of hydrogen sulfide from the biogas and with elementary sulfur formation has been developed.
