FACTORS INFLUENCING SOOT PARTICULATE FORMATION AND OXIDATION IN HIGH-PRESSURE SPRAY COMBUSTION

ABSTRACT

Results of experimental tests using a high-pressure continuous liquid-fuel spray combustor are presented. The effects on soot concentration of combustion pressure, overall input equivalence ratio, and diesel fuel quality are analyzed. Blends of diesel fuel with bio-fuel and emulsification with water are assessed. Particulate matter concentrations were measured in samples extracted from the combustion chamber and exhaust, under conditions free from the cyclic variations encountered in a reciprocating diesel engine. High-magnification electron-micrograph images of soot agglomerates, together with the corresponding particle-size analysis and showing the microstructure of primary particles, are presented.
