EXPERIMENTAL ANALYSIS OF PILOT INJECTION-ASSISTED PREMIXED CHARGE COMPRESSION IGNITION TO REDUCE EMISSIONS WITH JATROPHA OIL METHYL ESTER IN A DIESEL ENGINE

ABSTRACT

The factors to be considered while designing a new combustion process are a higher compression ratio, lean homogeneous air–fuel mixture, complete combustion and instantaneous combustion, which leads to Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI). HCCI is a clean and efficient combustion process. In this work, an attempt has been made to experimentally analyze the performance and emission characteristics of the HCCI process with Premixed Charge Compression Ignition (PCCI) mode assisted with pilot injection as a combustion initiator. Experiments were conducted in a modified single cylinder water-cooled diesel engine employing a conceptual system known as transient state fuel induction with different fuels such as diesel, petrol, and bio-diesel and it was observed that there was a reduction in the emission level of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon with the same power output as in the conventional diesel engine. At full load, the carbon monoxide emissions of various tested modes varied from 0.2% to 0.32%, the hydrocarbon of various modes tested varied from 11 ppm to 28 ppm, and the smoke emissions of various modes tested varied from 7 mg/m3 to 10 mg/m3.
