POWER GENERATION FOR A CLEANER ENVIRONMENT — A PERSPECTIVE
ABSTRACT
By 2010 the demand for electricity is set to increase by around 50% from its 1995 level. This will require the installation of substantial new power generation capacity, around 1000 MW per week for the fifteen-year period. Coal and natural gas will be the primary energy sources to meet this demand with valuable contributions coming from hydroelectric and to a lesser extent renewables (although this latter energy source will be the sector with the fastest growth rate). The challenge for the power generation industry is to provide this new capacity while minimizing the impact on the global environment, particularly in terms of gaseous emissions of NOx, SOx, CO2, and particulates.
This paper sets out the medium-term global energy scenario and aims to identify the developments in power generation technology, particularly clean coal technologies, natural gas combined cycles, hydroelectric and biomass renewables, which ALSTOM regards as key to achieving this increased demand in an environmentally acceptable way.
