Effects of Cytokine-Like Polypeptide EMAP II and Flutamide on Testosterone-Stimulated Prostate of Castrated Rats
ABSTRACT
The effects of separate and combined administration of cytokine-like polypeptide EMAP II and flutamide, a non-steroid antiandrogen, on morphologyy and function of the accessory sexual glands in castrated immature male rats stimulated with testosterone propionate were studied. Anti-androgenic, pro-apoptotic, and pro-coagulating effects of EMAP II have been revealed in the ventral prostate. Combined use of the drugs resulted in enhanced anti-prostatic effects capable of inhibiting the processes of proliferation and apoptosis, as well as DNA, RNA and protein contents. Combined use of EMAP II and flutamide may be useful in developing new therapeutic modalities in prostate cancer.
