Ethics and Air Pollution in the 21st Century: Biomedical and Environmental Perspectives

Daniel A. Vallero
Duke University, Durham, NC 27708

ABSTRACT

Biomedical and environmental science and practice are called upon to address the societal problems caused by air pollution. This includes ethical treatment of those adversely affected by exposures to the pollutants, means of preventing the pollution, research to advance the understanding of the process that leads to adverse impacts, and discovery of new ways to intervene against threats currently posed by myriad air pollutants. This article provides a shared environmental and biomedical ethical perspective that can be scaled to address the issues at hand. Two cases are considered: global greenhouse gases and biotechnology materials.
