ABSTRACT

The dynamics of the explosive evaporation of various liquids at the nanosecond time-scale are studied experimentally. Pure water, ethanol, methanol, isopropanol (IPA), and different mixtures of IPA and water are in contact with the surface of a thin chromium film that is heated by ultraviolet (UV) KrF excimer laser pulses of nanosecond duration. The laser fluence threshold for vaporization and the transient development of the bubble nucleation process are monitored by reflectance and scattering measurements. The onset of phase change is marked by a strong acoustic signal that is detected by a piezoelectric transducer.
