AMINO-FUNCTIONALIZED ACTIVATED CARBON MATERIALS IN BASE-CATALYZED REACTIONS

ABSTRACT

Activated carbon (AC) is widely used as an industrial adsorbent and support and may be prepared by carbonization and activation using many raw materials such as coconut shell, wood, peat, and coal. Surface chemical modification of carbon can produce materials that can be used for specific applications. In the present work, AC was modified to introduce amino-containing groups. For this purpose, we first oxidized AC with HNO3 to increase the oxygen functionalities. The amino group was further grafted on oxidized AC using 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, ethylenediamine, and tri-ethylenetetramine. The prepared amino-functionalized AC was characterized by elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. Functionalized AC exhibited good catalytic activity and reusability as a base catalyst in Henry reactions, Knoevenagel condensation, and coumarin synthesis.
