EFFECT OF BICARBONATE AND CHLORIDE ELECTROLYTES ON PRODUCT DISTRIBUTION FOR CO2 ELECTROCHEMICAL REDUCTION ON Cu ELECTRODE

ABSTRACT

Electrode material, nature of electrolyte and applied potential are the dependent variables which effects the electrochemical conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2). Among the metals investigated for CO2 reduction, Cu shows a selective ability to form hydrocarbons at reasonable efficiencies. In this work, the effect of supporting electrolytes over a range of electrode potential for the electrochemical reduction of CO2 at Cu electrode in aqueous KCl and KHCO3 solution under ambient condition was compared. Electroreduction of CO2 performed in a divided H-type cell yielded methane, ethylene and ethane, with hydrogen as the byproduct. The KCl electrolyte yielded maximum ethylene formation of 2.1 mmol cm-2 corresponding to a Faradaic efficiency of 22.5% with ethane of 1.2 mmol cm-2 corresponding to a Faradaic efficiency of 16% at -1.6 V. Similarly, KHCO3 electrolyte yields maximum methane formation of 7 mmol cm-2 at -1.8 V corresponding to Faradaic efficiency of 19%.
