ABSTRACT

Lower leg amputation is a definite procedure, but many amputees can − and should be given the chance to − return to an active life. The proper surgical technique is crucial for a successful outcome. An amputation, which is a reconstructive procedure, must be carried out by surgeons with a thorough knowledge of the requirements of rehabilitation and prosthetic fitting. Surgery should proceed with care and, when needed, should include myodesis or myoplasty. Early postoperative mobilization is important. All amputees have a severe amputated leg muscle atrophy. The patient should, therefore, start leg and stump strengthening as soon as possible. Various leg and stump muscle training programs are presented in this review. Strength of the amputated leg is significantly correlated to step length and walking speed, indicating that leg strengthening will improve the amputee's functional and walking capacity.
The experience of rehabilitation in groups such as the Amputee Training Center is presented, as they show very good results, not only socially and psychologically but also concerning functional and walking ability.
