Rehabilitation Care and Management for the Individual with Cerebral Palsy, Ages 13 Through Early Adulthood
ABSTRACT
Adolescence is a critical time for growth, development and social adjustment for all teens. As more children with cerebral palsy live into adulthood, this transition period can also be a challenge for their parents, the school and the teen as this maybe a new unchartered experience not only for the teen but for those working with the teen. This thorough review of the literature explores issues specific to the adolescent with cerebral palsy in the areas of physical, mental and behavioral health, development, educational, policy and social systems to assist in optimizing transition into adulthood. Topics include preventative care, evaluation and management of common medical and dental comorbidities, growth, nutrition, functional goal setting, driving, education, housing options, life skills, sexuality, transitional planning and legal and medical-legal issues.
