ABSTRACT

A study of fossil nannoplankton and dinocysts from Oligocene basins of different types of the Northern Peri-Tethys resulted in paleoecological reconstructions. Phytoplankton associations of marine deep, shallow, relatively cold and warm water, and lagoon paleobasins were recognized. Haptophytes (nannoplankton) nannofossils were only present in carbonaceous sediments; the most favorable conditions for their development have been in the Carpathian basin of Krosnensky type, in the earliest Rupelian of Germany and in the south of the Ukraine. Dinocysts are present in all types of Oligocene basins. Correlation levels identified by nannofossils and dinocysts allowed researchers in this study to substantiate the lower and Upper Oligocene boundaries and degree of desalination in the Middle Rupelian.
