ABSTRACT

Literature data concerning the influence of radioactive contamination on algae belonging to different taxonomic groups are presented, as well as original data on accumulation of radionuclides by algae biomass in water bodies of different types. The results of radioecological analysis of the biomass of Cladophora glomerata (L.) Kütz., C. fracta (Vahl.) Kütz, Spirogyra mirabilis (hAss.) Kütz. collected in ponds, streams, lakes, rivers, ephemeral water bodies, and analysis of ooze from 13 habitats of these algae have shown that the investigated components of ecosystems contained the following radionuclides: Cs-134, Cs-137, k-40, Ra-226, Ra-228. The concentration factors of Cs-137 and k-40 for the above-mentioned algae were calculated. The highest concentration factors were characteristic of the filamentous green alga Spirogyra mirabilis occurring in ponds. This alga may be used as a bioindicator of low radioactive contamination.
