ABSTRACT

Strains of Oscillatoria agardhii Gom. isolated from Neva Bay of the Baltic Sea were investigated. Ultrastructure of cells of O. agardhii clearly differs from that of other representatives of the genus Oscillatoria. The arrangement of thylakoids in cytoplasm may serve as an additional taxonomic character of 0. agardhii. All studied strains had an inhibitory effect on examined organisms but differed in the level of toxicity. Toxicity of all studied strains of 0. agardhii increased during the exponential phase of growth, reaching its maximum at the beginning of the stationary phase. The study indicates a rather high toxicity of the tested strains.
